Turlock - After a strong first half, scoring three times, the Cal State Stanislaus women's soccer team was able to hold on and beat the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters, 3-2 on Senior Day Sunday at the Turlock Regional Sports Complex.
With the win, the Warriors are now 7-5-4 (3-5-3 CCAA), while the Otters drop to 1-15-1 (0-11 CCAA). The Warriors completed the season sweep of the Otters and are now 12-1 against CSU Monterey Bay all-time.
The Warriors scored three times, all in the first half to open up a 3-0 lead.
Adrienne Sorenson scored the first goal of the match in the 18th minute of play as she took a pass from
Marissa Dunaway and struck it into the upper left corner of the net.
Bri McClain added the Warriors second goal just over 30 minutes into the half.
Kayln Pottorf finished the scoring as she headed one in with just 30 seconds remaining in the half.
It looked as is the Warriors were going to cruise to a victory, until Alyssa Matheson scored on a penalty kick with just 12 minutes remaining. Matheson then added another goal in the final minute of play to make it 3-2, but time ran out on the Otter comeback.
"We did a good job of finishing opportunities," head coach Gabe Bolton stated, "but we give Monterey a lot of credit, they played with good energy and intensity".
"For the most part we did a good job of keeping possessions and controlling the game, but we have to maintain out focus for the full 90 minutes," added Bolton.
Before the match the Warriors honored seven seniors:
Melissa Phillips,
Jenna Kasch, Catlin Van Wormer,
Tiffani Moore,
Gennaka Fox, Rachel Matthews and
Adrienne Sorenson.
The Warriors will conclude their home schedule Friday October 24th as they host the Chico State Wildcats.
