POMONA — The reborn Cal State Stanislaus women's tennis program is off to an excellent start. The Warriors surprised the field by winning six of seven matches they competed in today on the first day of the Wilson/ITA Small College Regional Championships at Cal Poly Pomona.

Vanessa Reibstein was the work horse on Thursday as the sophomore transfer from Grossmont College won two singles matches and teamed with Verena Preikschas to win a second round doubles match. Reibstein defeated UC San Diego's Roxy Pourmirzaie in the first round, 6-3, 6-0 and advanced to easily upset fourth-seeded Stephanie Luk of Sonoma State, 6-1, 6-2, in the round of 32.

Then, Reibstein and Preikschas — the No. 4 seeded doubles team — disposed Sonoma State's Dana Carollo and Molly Maguire, 8-1.

"I am so very pleased with our first day. The girls played well and we won six of seven matches," CSUS head coach Verek Visaraga said. "Not bad for a first-year program."

Preikschas, a freshman from Amsberg, Germany, was seeded the No. 3 singles player in the draw and won her only singles match on the day. She defeated Cal Poly Pomona's Michelle Stock.

Sophomore Lexy Harrington and Modesto High graduate Katie Eng also took cared of their second-round opponents. Harrington beat Cal State L.A.'s Violetta Nosareva, 6-1, 6-0, while Eng defeated LA's Linda Majzolkova, 6-1, 6-3.

Harrington and Eng was edged out 8-6 in their doubles match against Anita Athavale and Pourmirzaie of UC San Diego.

The tournament continues Friday with championship rounds scheduled for Saturday.

Cal State Stanislaus is fielding its first women's tennis team since it was eliminated after the 1991 season.
