PETALUMA — The No. 5 Cal State Stanislaus men's golf team has not been able to turn in a good first round lately. Monday was no different as the Warriors found themselves at 10-over par 298, tied for fourth place, after one round of play at the NCAA Division II Men's West Regionals.
With Erick Justesen shooting an one-under score and everyone else scoring 72 or higher, the Warriors trail tournament leader Sonoma State by 13 strokes heading into Tuesday's second round at the Adobe Creek Golf Course.
Tournament host No. 2 Sonoma State, with three players in the top five, are currently in the lead at 3-under 285, followed by Western Washington with a five-over 293.
Cal State San Bernardino's Dane Bagnell is currently in the lead with a four-under 68, followed by two Sonoma State -- Patrick Bauer & Jarin Todd -- players tied for second at two-under 70.
Leading the way once again for the Warriors is Justesen, who like his teammates struggled through holes 7-9. He recovered in the back nine to card an 1-under 71 score and finished with four birdies on the day to counter his double-bogey on the 7th and a bogey on the 9th.
The Warriors had trouble with holes 7 through 9 on Monday as they collectively shot 17-over par during that stretch before making the turn. The Warriors had three double-bogeys and a triple-bogey, and took a 7 on a par-3 eighth on that part of the course.
Jason McHargue finished the day with a 2-over 74, Andy Moren carded a 4-over 76 and Ben Van Vuren scored a 77. Ryan Nickell's 80 was the high score not counting in the team scoring.
Moren was on a roll through six with an even par score, but got into trouble on the seventh to take a triple-bogey. By the time he made the turn, he was at six-over par 42. The Turlock native did manage three birdies on the back nine for the four-over final score.
Cal State Stanislaus was down 10 strokes after one round of play at the CCAA tournament before rallying back to finish second, four strokes behind winner Sonoma State.
The second round of the three-round tournament continues on Tuesday. To qualify for the National Championship tournament, a team would have to win the region or earn an at-large spot. Three at-large spots are being awarded in the West/Northwest Super Regionals.
