TURLOCK — Two goals were scored in the first 17 minutes of the match, but lots of action in the following 93 did not result in any more scoring as Cal State Stanislaus and Chico State played to a 1-1 tie in front of 1,405 fans Saturday night at Warrior Stadium.
Cal State Stanislaus was given a gift at 16:35 on a Chico State own goal — that turned out to be tremendous for the Warriors as they earned a point against the CCAA North Division leaders Chico State. Earlier in the season, Chico State edged the Warriors 2-1 in Chico.
The Warriors are now 7-6-1 overall and 3-6-1 in conference play and was undefeated at 2-0-1 in their last three home matches. The Wildcats picked up its fourth tie of the season and are now 7-3-4 and 5-1-4 in the CCAA as they continue to lead in the divisional standings.
Stanislaus has six matches remaining this season with four on the road, starting with a pair in Southern California next weekend. The Warriors are 5-1-1 at Warrior Stadium this season.
"
We played well for 110 minutes tonight and that's not easy to do. We were very dangerous the entire match and a little unlucky not to pull out a win," Warriors head coach Gabriel Bolton said.
Ali Sward got the Wildcats on the board in the 14th minute with her fifth goal of the season when she got a pass from Lisa Webster. Webster's pass split the defenders and drew Stanislaus goalkeeper
Millie Brown out. Sward finished the chance by knocking the ball to the opposite post to give Chico a 1-0 lead.
In the 17th minute, the Warriors mounded an attack, but when a Chico State defender tried to head the ball back, the ball slipped past Chico goalie Natalie Bensky for an own goal.
The match stayed 1-1 with even play on both sides until the first overtime period. Cal State Stanislaus completely dominated the first extra period offensively with a number of scoring chances, but each time coming up empty.
"
We created great chances and overtime. Our team really turned up the intensity," Bolton added.
The Warriors' best scoring chance came with about two minutes left in the first OT when
Lisa Garcia's shot inside the box was blocked by a defender. The ball ended up at
Apryl Whitney's feet with her shot attempt again blocked. Whitney got the rebound and had a clear shot to the upper right corner of the net, but her attempt sailed just inches high.
CSUS freshman
Shelby Cargile received praise from Bolton on her performance, shutting down Sward for most of the contest.
"
Shelby was the player of the match. After (Alena Smajlagic) got injured she came in to the right back position and shut down (Sward)," Bolton said. "That's not easy to do. Shelby's performance is tonight is a great example of what we want our program to be about. You compete all week in practice and then take advantage of your opportunities."
In the end, the Warriors out-shot Chico 17-9 and Brown finished with five saves.
Next weekend's SoCal road trip begins at Cal Poly Pomona on Friday with a 4:30 p.m. match.
