TURLOCK — Sylvia Schmidt had 19 kills as she led the second-ranked UC San Diego Tritons volleyball team over host Cal State Stanislaus in straight sets, 25-16, 25-22, 25-21, Friday night at Warrior Arena.

Lianne Vicchio was once again the Stanislaus leader with eight kills as the Warriors dropped to 8-17 overall and 2-15 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. UC San Diego, winner of 14 straight matches, improved to 23-1 overall and 15-1 in the CCAA to stay one-half game behind conference leader Cal State San Bernardino.

Vicchio also had 11 digs and two aces to pace the Warriors. Jessica Lehner picked up 13 digs to go with her 19 assists and five kills. Andrea Fett and Janay Bankston each had seven kills. Lauren Charles had 12 digs while Megan Britton led with three service aces.

After being dominated in the first set 25-16, the Warriors batted in both the second and third. But UCSD kept many long rallies alive with blocking and digging to retain control of the match.

Schmidt was 19 for 39 without an hitting error on the attack as UCSD hit .272 as a team. Also contributing for the Tritons are HIllary Williams with 11 kills and Katie Condo with nine kills. Libero Roxanne Brunsting led with 17 digs and setter Elaine Chen had 35 assists, 15 digs and three block-assists plus three kills.

UC San Diego is ranked No. 2 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association Top 25 behind defending national champion Concordia-St. Paul (Minn.), which is 25-0 leading into the weekend. Cal State San Bernardino is No. 3.

Cal State Stanislaus, which is in a four-match homestand over two weekends, will host Cal State East Bay (8-16, 6-10 CCAA) on Halloween night at 7 p.m.
