SEASIDE —
Alena Smajlagic scored the golden goal in the 106th minute as the Cal State Stanislaus women's soccer team pulled off a 2-1 thrilling win over Cal State Monterey Bay Friday afternoon at the Otter Soccer Complex.
Smajlagic picked up a pass from
Alisa Barlow in front of the net to knock in the winner over CSUMB goalie's head for the team's first CCAA road victory. With the win, the Warriors even their overall record to 9-9-1 with one match remaining. Cal State Stanislaus is 5-9-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and will wrap-up the season on Sunday at San Francisco State.
"That finish was just a skilled bit of soccer. She settled a great pass from (Barlow) and chipped it over their goalie." CSUS Stanislaus head coach
Gabriel Bolton said of Smajlagic's game-winner.
Holly Johnson scored the other goal for the Warriors, which came at 54:55, that tied the match at 1-1.
Lisa Garcia got the assist on the Johnson score. In a scramble in front of the goal, Johnson, a freshman defender, got the loose ball to even the score.
"Sometimes putting it in the net is about who wants it more. Holly just kept fighting until it was in the back of the net after Lisa hit a great corner kick," Bolton said.
With 10 goals and five assists, Garcia now has 25 points this season, putting her just two points behind Marti Teunissen's record of 27 set in 2005.
The win over Cal State Monterey Bay was the Warriors' sixth straight as they improved to 13-1-0 all-time against the Otters.
Monterey Bay (4-12-3, 3-10-2 CCAA) got on the board first just before the end of the first half on a Isabella Ortuno score from a Lindsey Gatlin cross.
Goalkeeper
Jessica Sitarz had three saves for the Warriors while her opposing goalie Andrea Davis was also credited with three saves.
