SAN FRANCISCO —
Denali Foldager was once again the top runner for the Cal State Stanislaus women's cross country team as she placed 25th at the NCAA West Regional Championships on Saturday. She led the team to a 12th place finish in the 25-team field.
Foldager clocked 22 minutes, 18.2 seconds in the 6,000-meter run at the Speedway Meadow in Golden Gate Park as the event was hosted by San Francisco State.
Two-time defending national champion Jessica Pixler of Seattle Pacific claimed the individual crown with a winning time of 20:08.9, outdistancing Western Washington's Sarah Porter, who took second with a 20:42.3 clocking, while the Alaska Anchorage trio of Hallide Wilt (21:11.5), Ruth Keino (21:11.8) and Miriam Kipng'Eno (21:17.9) rounded out the top five.
Bolstered by the aforementioned placers, Alaska Anchorage captured the team title with 35 points, followed by Chico State (58 points), Seattle Pacific (89 points) and Western Washington (64 points), as the top four women's teams advance to the NCAA Division II Championships, Nov. 21, in Evansville, Ind. Meanwhile, Cal State L.A.'s Vivien Wadeck and Megan Rolland of Humboldt State also punched their ticket to the national meet after finishing as the top two individual runners from non-advancing teams in the West Region.
"The Foldagers ran an outstanding race. This is a very tough region and our women's team did well against the competition," CSUS head coach Diljeet Taylor said. "It was an improvement from last year."
Rubye Foldager finished 32nd in 22:45.7 as the twin sisters from Seward, Alaska, capped-off the season as the Warriors' top two runners. The Warriors were also paced by
Chelsea Deerinck who finished 59th in a time of 23:23.7 and Mary Courtright came in 79th in 23:52.6. Rounding out the Stanislaus top five was
Alyssa Thiele (24:30.5).
Lindsay Garcia (24:52.1) and
Andrea Johnson (25:00.3) also competed on Saturday.
Cal State Stanislaus finished 17th at the regional championships in La Jolla last season.
