TURLOCK — Head coach
Gabriel Bolton announced today that 11 high school seniors have signed national letters of intent to play women's soccer at Cal State Stanislaus next fall.
“This is a special group of players,” said Bolton. “All of them come from the top high school and club programs in California. They are all extremely talented and very well coached. When you combine these players with the terrific talent we have returning, 2009 promises to be an exciting year.”
Three players that have already played for Bolton, who will enter his fifth season at the helm for the 2009 season, highlight the recruiting class. Forwards
Brianna Scales (Cameron Park/Ponderosa HS) and
Elle Porter (Fair Oaks/Bella Vista HS) both played for Bolton on his Boca Jrs. '90 team, which won the 2006 U.S. Club National Championship. In addition, defender
Sierra Casas (SacramentoDel Campo HS) played on Bolton's Boca Jrs. '91 team.
“It is an honor to coach all three of these players again,” said Bolton. “They all know the system and style that I like to play so there is a certain comfort level that exists already.”
The Warriors continue to dip into the talent in Southern California, attracting three standouts to the program. Center midfielder
Jennifer Thornton (Corona/Santiago HS) is a crafty playmaker from one of the top clubs in the nation, O.C. Premier. She is joined by Nado Select teammates
Taylor Waldon (Poway/Poway HS) and
Rachel Naranjo (San Diego/Eastlake HS). Waldon is an explosive goal-scoring forward. Naranjo is a speedy defender/midfielder who will also run track for the Warriors.
“Southern California has tremendous talent and we were able to sign three of the best,” said Bolton. “The thing I like the most about these players is they have a tremendous amount of experience playing at the highest level. That will benefit them in college.”
Bolton also continued the trend of attracting outstanding local talent to the Warriors with the signing of two defenders.
Hilary Callahan (Jamestown/Sonora HS) is a left-defender who plays her club soccer for the California Cougars.
Apryl Whitney (Modesto/Modesto HS) is a center-defender who plays her club soccer for the Ajax United Soccer Club. They are joined by
Holly Johnson (Fresno/Bullard HS) and
Shelby Cargile (Newcastle/Del Oro HS). Johnson is a center-defender while Cargile's primary position is right-defender.
“All four of these players are fantastic defenders and they each fit a specific need,” noted Bolton. “The nice thing about each of these players is that they are not only physical and tough defenders but they all have outstanding skill on the ball.”
The final incoming player hails from the Bay Area.
Angela Bell (San Jose/COIL Charter HS) is an explosive attacking player that can play any position along the Cal State Stanislaus forward line.
“Angela is a fantastic player with the speed, skill and the competitive spirit to score a lot of goals,” said Bolton. “She is going make a big impact.”
The Warriors will open the 2009 season in the new Warrior Stadium on August 27 when they host Hawaii Hilo as part of a soccer doubleheader with the men's team.
