CHICO — The 2009 California Collegiate Athletic Association Track & Field Championships meet gets underway on Thursday when the conference’s top athletes converge on the campus of Chico State. A strong group of Cal State Stanislaus Warriors will be competing.

The Warriors’ top contender to win a CCAA championship in a men’s individual event is Kasey Burlingham in the pole vault. The current CCAA athlete of the week enters the meet with the top height of 16-10 3/4and is among the top pole vaulter in NCAA Division II.

The Warriors are also strong, and deep, in a number of other events which bolds well for the team scoring as the group could notch enough team points to challenge some of the top track programs in the conference.

Terry Gross will take his top CCAA time (48.52) in the 400-meter dash into the race while teammate Jerome Johnson posted the fourth best time in the event. Johnson also has the eighth best time in the 200-meter dash this season. In the 3000-meter steeplechase, Martin Ramos has the CCAA’s third best time to date with a 9:32.46.

In the other field events, Guat Vallejo-Howard could double in the discus (155-04) and hammer throw (183-11). Both of his marks rank second on the CCAA lists this season. Burlingham’s teammates, Solomon Granillo (15-7) and Andrew County (15-7) have the third best heights this the CCAA this season.

Also watch for Luther Bell to compete in the long jump and Rashee Dean in the triple jump, as well as Kenny Belmont to place high in the javelin throw.
