CHICO -- The Cal State Stanislaus men's track and field team had a great day on Friday, the second day of the 2009 California Collegiate Athletic Association Track & Field Championships at Chico State.
Through the day's events, the Warriors are in second place behind Chico State, 45-36, in the team standings.
Guat Vallejo-Howard became the second consecutive Warrior to win the men's hammer conference title as the junior threw 174 feet, 2 inches, edging out Matt Jarvis of Chico State who finished secod with a 167-08. Cal State Stanislaus' Valentin Alberto was fifth with a 160-07 in the event.
Vallejo-Howard also finished second in the discus throw with a 146-9 to account for 18 of the team's points.
In another men's final,
Luther Bell placed third to earn All-CCAA third team honors in the long jump with a leap of 22-5 1/4.
Rashee Dean was fourth with a 21-11 1/2. Cal Poly Pomona's Jonathan Williams won with a jump of 23-6 1/4.
In decathlon,
Antoine Sept placed ninth with 5,053 points. Chico State's Josh Linker was the winner (6782).
In other preliminary events on Friday,
Terry Gross had the top qualifying time in his heat in the 400-meter run. Gross clocked 49.62, the second fastest time on the day.
Jerome Johnson will also compete in the finals on Saturday with a time of 50.56.
Jesse Ooten (100-meter run) also qualified for finals and Gross is among the athletes completing in the 200-meter run on Saturday as well.
At press time, full results of Friday's competition are not available. The meet concludes on Saturday with 31 men's and women's finals events.
