Guy competed in heat one of two during the preliminaries of the 400-meter hurdles event, but did not qualify for the finals. Guy, who had ranked No. 1 in the country for most of the season, ran a 53.21 to finish fifth in his heat. His time, however, was ninth fastest with the top eight advancing to Saturday's finals.
Angelo State's Jeremy Jones had the fastest time of 52.10 and Grand Valley State's Bill Makela had the eighth and final qualifying time of 52.82. The top eight in each event also earn All-American status.
