Cal State Stanislaus sophomore Teddy Schrier shot an 8-under 136 to win the USGA Amateur Qualifying Sectional event at Brookside Country Club in Stockton on Monday. With the win, the Atwater native advanced to the US Amateur Championship at the Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Aug. 24-30.
Schrier shot a 70 in the morning round and finished with a 66 in the afternoon for the 136 total, winning by three strokes over Roseville's Tanner Makimoto.
"It's a real honor qualfying for the biggest amateur championship in the world," CSU Stanislaus head coach John Cook said. "His hard work this summer is paying off for him. I am extremely proud of him."
During the 2008-09 collegiate season, Schrier had a solid year as a rookie with a stroke average of 75.8. His best finish was a second place showing at the Hanny Stanislaus Invitational at the Turlock Golf and Country Club where he led through the first two rounds. His best tournament score was a two-under 214 last October at the Sonoma State Invitational in Santa Rosa.
Two other Warriors also excelled earlier in the summer with Danny Hoff and J.T. Cockerill both winning major local tournaments. On Sunday, July 26, Hoff shot a six-under for the tournament to win the Bakersfield City Amateur Golf Championship at the Sundale Country Club in Bakersfield.
In late June, Cockerill led wire to wire (68-67-68-203) to win the Northern Nevada Amateur at Genoa Lakes Golf Course.
