TURLOCK — For the third consecutive year, the Cal State Stanislaus women’s soccer program has received the College Team Academic Award from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.  CSU Stanislaus is one of only two programs in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) to make the list.

For the 2008-09 academic year, the Warriors posted a 3.19 grade point average as a team to rank among the nation’s leaders. While standing out academically, the team has also been a winner on the field with winning records in eight of the last nine seasons.

“California State University, Stanislaus takes great pride in the accomplishments of its student-athletes, both in the athletic arena and in the classroom,” CSU Stanislaus President Ham Shirvani said. “Members of our women’s soccer team have demonstrated that they are focused on earning their degrees with distinction as well as winning seasons.”

“I’m very proud of the work the women on our team do in the classroom,” head coach Gabriel Bolton said. “Getting recognized for their effort is nice but the most important thing is that they are making progress toward their degrees and careers.”

Cal State Stanislaus is among the 337 NCAA Division I, II, III, and NAIA women’s soccer teams on the list. However, the Warriors and Chico State are the only programs from the CCAA to make the list.

“It is important to recognize the many people at Stanislaus that help our student-athletes achieve their goal,” Bolton added. “Our academic advisor Amye Leon does a tremendous job supporting them on a daily basis. We also have a very supportive faculty. They deserve a lot of credit.”

Nationwide, a total of 582 soccer teams (145 men, 337 women) posted a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher, thereby earning the NSCAA Team Academic Award for the 2008-09 academic year.

In recent years, many student-athletes from the Cal State Stanislaus women’s soccer program have earned individual academic awards at the national, regional, and conference levels.
