NORTHRIDGE -- Cal State Stanislaus's valentine's day date with Cal State Northridge didn't go the way of the Warriors, but the match against the Division I should prepare them well for the upcoming CCAA season.
The Cal State Northridge women's tennis team (2-0) swept Cal State Stanislaus 7-0 in the Matadors' home opener Sunday at the Matador Tennis Complex. CSUN did not lose a set in its six singles matches against the Warriors.
Starting in doubles, the Matadors dispatched of CSUS by winning all three matches. At the No. 1 draw, Brooke Doane and Anna Yang defeated the team of Verena Preikschas and Katie Eng, 8-0. In the second draw, juniors Whitney Paluch and Nina Jaworowski battled to an 8-6 victory over Vanesa Reibstein and Arina Polovnikova.
Finally, Nigora Sirojiddinova and Maria Pistalu handed the team of Heather Cotter and Brianna McClintock an 8-5 decision in the No. 3 match.
In singles, Doane continued to to play at the No. 1 draw, defeating Preikschas, who retired down 3-0 in the first set. Jaworowski took a 7-6 (4) and 6-4 victory over Reibstein at the No. 2 position. Finally, Paluch recorded a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Eng at the third draw.
In the bottom half of the bracket, Yang won her No. 4 draw with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Polovnikova. At the fifth draw, Sirojiddinova bested Erin McGurty in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-2. Finally, Pistalu took care of McClintock in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-2.
Through two matches this year, CSUN has lost only one set in singles play and has yet to lose any of their doubles contests.
Despite falling to 0-3, the Warriors used a tough preseason schedule in prepare for the upcoming California Collegiate Athletic Association. The Warriors lost to Division I's San Jose State and Cal State Northridge and NAIA No. 2 Fresno Pacific.
Stanislaus opens the CCAA season with six-time defending conference champion UC San Diego on Feb. 20.
