SAN JOSE -- The spring portion of the Women's Tennis season began Sunday for Cal State Stanislaus and the Warriors took Division I San Jose State to the limits before falling 4-3.
The top three Stanislaus singles players -- No. 1
Verena Preikschas, No. 2
Vanesa Reibstein and No. 3
Katie Eng -- all won their individual matches.
"There were some really great matches," head coach
Verek Visaraga said. "It came down to No. 6 singles. They won the tiebreaker at No. 6."
At No. 6 singles,
Lexy Harrington and her opponent Jennifer Williams were deadlocked at 2-2 in the final set tie-breaker before Williams took five of the last six points to win, 6-7 (4), 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3).
Preikschas defeated Spartans' top play Olivia Marshall by retirement with Preikschas ahead 5-0. Reibstein disposed of Kerri Kummer, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 2 singles play. Eng rebounded from losing the first set 3-6 to beat Sandra Florea 3-6, 7-6 (5) and 6-4.
The Warriors' No. 1 doubles team of Preikschas and Eng easily handled SJSU's top group of Anna Guzman and Jennifer Williams, 8-1.
It was also a close match at No. 3 doubles before
Heather Cotter and
Erin McGurty lost to Marshall and Chau Troung, 9-8.
