CHICO — In the sport of cross country in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, finishing second in a championship is like a victory — and the Cal State Stanislaus women's team did just that for the second consecutive season.

Led by the trio of Rachel Naranjo, Marina Vorderbruegge and Dallas Campbell, the Warriors placed second at the CCAA Cross Country Championships at Hooker Oak Park in Chico.

As expected, host No. 7 Chico State, the distance running national powerhouse program, won its sixth straight conference championship with 29 team points. Chico State's Ayla Granados was the individual champion in 22:10.9 as the Wildcats placed four runners in the top seven.

"I am really proud of the women for another great finish (at conference)," head coach Diljeet Taylor said. "To finish second again behind Chico is a great accomplishment for the team and for our program. We've worked hard to get to this point and will continue to work and improve moving forward to regionals."

The Warriors, ranked No. 25 in the nation and No. 4 in the West entering the meet, did not disappoint as they reached their realistic goal of repeating as the runner-up in the 11-team meet.

What was a little bit of a surprise was Naranjo's third place finish in a time of 22:18.8 in the 6,000-meter run as the team's first finisher ahead of season-long leader Campbell. Campbell still faired well with a ninth place time of 22:46.4, just behind Marina Vorderbruegge's 22:45.7, good for eighth.

All three runner also earned All-CCAA honors — the second straight year that the women's team placed three all-conference runners. It was also Naranjo's second All-CCAA nod — not bad for someone who came to Cal State Stanislaus to play soccer.

The team's second place finish, with 77 points and well ahead of Cal Poly Pomona's 118, matched last year's placing. The Warriors have now finished a program-best second three times in 1991, 2012 and 2013.

Katie Timmermans ran a 23:01.5 for 26th (25 points), followed by Sarah Miranda's 23:19.4 for 33rd (32 points) to account for the five scorers.

Also participated on Saturday were Lizzie Grolle (23:56.6), Gabbee Maldonado (24:21.4), Laticia Joven (24:29.6), Aman Hundal (24:52.9), and Ty Jones (25:15.4).

Next on the agenda for the Warriors is the NCAA West Regional Championships in Spokane, Wash., on Nov. 9.
