TURLOCK — In the season's first outdoor meet, the Cal State Stanislaus men's track and field team was led by
Caleb Monticalvo and
Josh Uikilifi at the Stanislaus Open Invitational on Saturday.
The middle distance runners
Terrance Ellis, Dawson Vorderbrueggge and
Dean Alley, also got their running shoes on in topping the 1500-meter event.
Monticalvo started the year setting a high-bar for himself as he cleared 15-feet-7 inches in the men's pole vault to put himself on the NCAA provisional qualifying list.
Kyle Maxwell just missed out on that mark, vaulting a 15-1 on Saturday.
In the throwing events, Uikilifi had a day in his Warrior debut. The junior transfer won the shot put and hammer throws and finished third behind two unattached entries.
Uikilifi won the shot put by edging out teammate
Ryan Gates with a toss of 48-feet, 3 1/2 inches. Gates was second with a 45-1 1/2. Uikilifi then won hammer with a mark of 172-10 while
Thomas Gesser (169-7) and
Juan Contreras finished third and fourth.
Uikilifi's mark of 145-9 in the discus was good for third.
In the 1500-meter run, Ellis won in a time of 4:07.40, ahead of Vorderbruegge (4:10.40) and
Dean Alley (4:12.60). Vorderbruegge also finished second in the 3000-meter run in 8:41.85.
