Holy Names rallied late to prevent Warriors twinbill sweep

2/9/2013 5:12:00 PM

TURLOCK — Holy Names miraculously rallied for four runs in the final inning of the doubleheader to get away with a win as the Cal State Stanislaus softball team split the twinbill on Saturday.

Brittani Weatherford and Randee Hindman combined for an one-hit shutout for a 1-0 game-one win before the Hawks rallied to defeat the Warriors, 6-3, in the nightcap.

The Warriors, now 5-3 overall, begin conference play next weekend at Cal State Monterey Bay.

In Saturday's first game, Weatherford turned in a quality start to earn the win. She gave up a harmless single in the sixth, struck out one and walked one in six full innings of work to improve to 3-1 on the year.

With the team leading 1-0, Hindman entered in the seventh, and after issuing a leadoff walk, shut-down the Hawks for her third straight save in as many opportunities this week.

That Hindman well might have been tabbed a little too much, however, in the second game. Hindman entered the game in the fifth and got a flyout to end a Holy Names threat. She then pitched a 1-2-3 sixth before getting into trouble in the seventh, trying to preserve a 3-2 lead.

A Holy Names (1-6) double started the seventh, but Hindman got two outs before issuing a walk to Kaeli Hunyady before turning the lineup over to the top of the order. Leadoff batter Alexia Moctezuma blooped a seeing-eye single to center to tie the game. Hailey McGuigan then followed with a three-run homer to left for the 6-3 score.

The Warriors had a 1-0 lead until the third when HNU tied it on two consecutive illegal pitches called with a runner at second, which plated the run.

Cierrah Mullins belted her second homer of the year in the third inning to put Stanislaus back up 1-0, but HNU tied it again in the fifth on another illegal pitch with a runner at third.

Stanislaus earned its third run in the sixth on a timely triple to right-centerfield by Amy Droege that scored pinch-runner Mia Ramirez from first.

In the first game, Mullins' double in the fifth scored Weatherford from second for the only run of the game. Weatherford had beat-out a bunt single and stole second with one out.

Mullins ended up with a 3-for-7, double, home-run, two RBI day. She had two hits in game two. Lauren Liming, Weatherford and Sarah Locarnini all had two hits on the day.
