Warrior Tennis hosts inaugural Invitational this weekend

The inaugural Warrior Tennis Invitational is this weekend as Cal State Stanislaus hosts Dominican, Holy Names, UC Santa Cruz and Sonoma State in a Fall event. The tournament runs from Friday to Sunday at the campus tennis courts.

Last Time Out: This is the Warriors' first tournament competition this Fall since the ITA Regionals at Cal State L.A. They did not participate in the Sonoma State event last week as originally scheduled. At the ITA Regionals, top doubles team J'Ana Diamond and Jessica Laurie advanced to the quarterfinal round before losing to eventual winner and top seed Dallas Zhang and Karne Liu of BYU Hawaii ... Laurie was the top Warrior as she advanced to the round of 16 in singles play against Zhang.

First Invitational: The Warriors are hosting the Fall tournament for the first time with four visiting programs visiting. The tournament will feature 46 singles matches and 20 doubles matches with champions crowned in doubles play and two singles flights. Participating teams are Sonoma State, Dominican, Holy Names, and UC Santa Cruz.

Familiar Names: Holy Names also participated in the ITA Regionals earlier this season. The Warriors faced two of them in that event, both Stanislaus victories. Jessica Laurie beat Lexi Bevens in the first round and J'Ana Diamond was also victorious over Hawks' Amaru Hernandez in round one. HNU's Chelsea Smithback and Mariel Bautist won a first round doubles contests over the Warriors' Analyssa Tallas and Jessica Stokes.

Tournament Scheduling: In doubles play, four teams will remain after Friday's play with the semifinals scheduled for Saturday at 9 a.m. The doubles championship will be on Sunday at 9 a.m. The consolation bracket will also happen concurrently ... In singles play, there are two flights of 16 players each. The quarterfinals will be on Saturday at either 10 a.m. or 11 a.m. with the semifinals to follow. Seeded Players: Warrior duo J'Ana Diamond and Jessica Laurie is the top seeded doubles team in the tournament. They will take the court at 10 a.m. Friday versus a Dominican team ... Laurie is also seeded No. 3 in singles play and will face Sonoma State's Karlee Budge at 1 p.m. ... Dominican's Rickimae Torres is the top seed in singles competition, followed by No. 2 Jordyn Kearney (Sonoma State), Laurie and Kaitlyn Haithcock (Sonoma State) at No. 4.

Making Their 2014 Debuts: Returning junior Kaitlyn Ireland will be making her season debut this weekend. Her first match is with teammate Sarah Cardenas on Friday at 10 a.m. Cardenas, a freshman from San Bernardino, is making her Warrior debut. Ireland's singles match is at 3 p.m. in Flight B against Sonoma State's Mariann Bukich while Cardenas will face Sonoma State's Julie Rea, also at 3 p.m. Friday.
