BACK TO BACK! Warriors repeat as CCAA Champions

Results

STOCKTON — Back to Back.

It was a new format, but for the Cal State Stanislaus men's golf team the results were familiar as the Warriors repeat as the conference team champions on Wednesday at the California Collegiate Athletic Association Men's Golf Championships.

Cal State Stanislaus defeated Cal State East Bay, 3.5 to 1.5, in medal match play to capture the program's fourth — and second consecutive — CCAA title. The Warriors won here at the Brookside Country Club last year in regular stroke play. Stanislaus had also won the conference tournament banner in 1999, 2007 and 2014.

In the inaugural season with the new tournament format, the Warriors beat Cal State Monterey Bay in the semifinals on Tuesday to get the opportunity to repeat as winners on Wednesday. On Monday, all eight CCAA teams played 36 holes to determine the individual champion and the top four teams qualified for Tuesday's semifinal match play.

"They worked really hard yesterday to get back by Monterey Bay. Today (the Warriors) came out of the gate hot and they kept plugging along," CSUS head coach John Cook said. "We played great today and had four scores under par as a team. It was a really good battle...East Bay was a really good team to play against today."

Anthony Manguray, Michael Mencaccy and Tyler Leeworthy all won their head-to-head matches and Connor Day was even with A.J. Hebert to account for the 3.5 points. Adam Stone picked up the full team point for the Pioneers in the match-up against Stanislaus freshman Jahaan Nargussi.

With Manguray and Mencaccy pulled out ahead early in the front nine, it looked as if the Leeworthy-Sam Lavelle match-up was going to be the deciding factor at the turn. Lavelle finished the first nine hole with a one-stroke lead, but things turned quickly when he triple-bogeyed the par-5 10th hole. Once Leeworthy took over the lead, he finished out the back nine strong with three birdies at No. 10, 16 and 17 to win by 9 strokes to clinched the team victory for Stanislaus.

"Tyler played great today. I put him out there later in the lineup because I thought it was his time. He's a senior and he's been wanting (to have a strong outing) all year," Cook said. "I am very proud of him. It was a good day for Tyler."

Manguary jumped out to an early lead on his opponent Joel Keylor and never let-up as the returning All-American finished the round at 2-under to win by six strokes. Mencaccy pulled ahead by two strokes at No. 4 and rolled to a 5-under day, winning over Ignacio Ognian by seven shots.

Played with a two-shot deficit, Day got even when Hebert doubled No. 15 as the duo both finished at 3-under to split the point. With Leeworthy's 3-under 69, four Warriors shot under-par on the day to finish off a tremendous week at Brookside.

"They finally started to believe in themselves and their abilities again," Cook said about the team's turnaround. "We had it going in the Fall but lost ourselves a little bit early in the Spring. We got it back together now and hopefully we can keep the momentum going at regionals."

The NCAA West Regional Championship tournament is May 4-6 at the Hiddenbrooke Golf Club in Vallejo.
